The Real Estate story of the week is: Property Taxes
Ugh! I don't know about you, but I am hearing from folks all over town about how unpleasant this year's property appraisals are. Chris and I join you in being, at best, disappointed, and, at worst, shocked and horrified with our latest DCAD statement.
We spend so much time promoting home ownership, and that is not lip service. We 100% believe that the best way to grow your assets is through thoughtfully-chosen real estate holdings.
But what can one do when the tax man comes calling with a really ugly increase?
1) Ensure that you have filed your Homestead exemption and that this exemption is indicated on your property entry on the DCAD website.
2) Ensure that if you are due any other exemptions (e.g. 65+) that you are taking advantage of them.
3) If you believe your tax increase truly exceeds the value of your home, given recent sales in the area, then fight the tax increase by May 20, 2023. You can fight the increase yourself (I did this once--and won!); or you can hire a professional. Please call/text/email me or Chris if we can help you think about fighting a property tax increase.
